Walkaround North American - Noorduyn Harvard

The Harvard was used as trainer and light ground attack plane. It dates back from the 1941 and Harvards were build in licence from North American bij Noorduyn Canada. Some variation of engines were used, but mainly from the P&W R-1340- series. The name Texan was used in the USA and the name Harvard was used particularly for aircraft in the United Kingdom and the Harvard 4 for Canada and Harvard 4K for Belgium. Thousands of airplanes were build and used by many air forces for training. Many are now used for fun flying by private pilots.

Some main versions include:

AT-6 with 600 hp R-1340 engine with 2 machine guns;

AT-6A, very similar to AT-6 and US NAVY SNj-3; later redesignated T-6A.

AT-6B is a AT-6A but with dorsal gun;

AT-6C as AT-6B but with some wood used and called Harvard III in U.K; also designated T-6C.

AT-6D as AT-6B but with some other electrical systems and Harvard IIA in U.K, T-6D and US NAVY SNJ-5; The SNJ-5C has an arrestor hook.

AT-6F as AT-6D but with stronger airframe and clear fixed canopy; US NAVY ref SNJ-6.

AT-16 are Noorduyn built aircraft.

T-6G are improved earlier model aircraft with better cockpit, steerable tail wheel and simplified canopy framing. Also some US NAVY SNJ-7 with the SNJ-7B also having armament.

Note that the canopy/sliding cockpit hood offen differs between variants.

Several scale models exist of the Harvard and Texan. In 1/72 scale there are the models of Revell, Doyusha, HobbyBoss, Encore and Academy. In 1/48 Monogram has a kit. In 1/32 Kittyhawk issued a very nice kit in 2014. Particularly check the canopy lengths of the different kits as on real Harvards and Texans, variations are possible. Sometimes, there are less hood frames and the rear curved glass is longer.
