The Grumman A-6 Intruder was developed in the nineteen sixties for the US Navy that needed a carrier based attack aircraft. It is a twin jet-engine, mid-wing attack aircraft and was put in service with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps between 1963 and 1997. Te Intruder was all-weather and was extensively used in the Vietnam War, operating from various US carriers. The Intruder evolved into a number of version, including a four seat electronic warfare derivative, the EA-6B Prowler. Intruders were later replaced with EF-18 Growlers for use by the USNavy. No aircraft were exported.

A-6E TRAM

The A-6E featured up-graded targeting sensors and computers as well as new engines. Eventually the TRAM (Target Recognition Attack Multi-sensor) turret was installed in the Intruders to provide even better target recognition at night and in bad weather using infrared cameras and laser target designators. This A-6E TRAM ser.no 155713 has a low visibility scheme of VA-128 (Navy Attack Squadron 128) Whidby Island NAS, Washington, ca. 1990. This aircraft is at the Pima Air Museum, Tucson AZ.

Various scale models exist of the A-6 Intruder in many scales. Old kits in 1/72 were from Revell and Hasegawa. Fujimi later issued far better 1/72 kits. In 1/48 there is a Monogram/Revell kit and even in 1/32 Trumpeter China released an A-6A kit end 2013 which is very nice.
